Zelnick Weighs in on the Celtics’ Future

Thomas Zelnick, Staff Writer

The Boston Celtics have always been one of the best franchises in the NBA.  They have seventeen NBA championship wins and are looking for more. They have some of the best players to ever play the game and have an amazing coach right now in Brad Stevens.  I am tackling some of the questions floating around on the Internet.

1. Who could the Celtics trade for to make their team better?

I think the Celtics should try to trade for Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans because right now they don’t have an amazing power forward or center, and they could use a guy like Davis. Davis is one of the best big guys in the league, averaging 29.0 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, and would help them beat the Golden State Warriors or any other of the high seeded teams.

2. What would happen if the Celtics got Anthony Davis?

If the Celtics got Davis, I think that they would have a great chance at winning the NBA championship because they would have that big man that they have been missing.  If they want to get Davis, they would have to give up some of their valuable players, such as Jaylen Brown or maybe even Jayson Tatum. I think it would be worth it to give up Al Horford, Jaylen Brown, and a future first-round pick for Davis and a second-round pick.  This trade would help the Celtics because they’re trying to win a championship, and that trade would help them do that.

3. When will they win their next championship?

If they start playing a lot better, try to get a higher seed in the East, and make some trades for a big name player, then they have a chance at winning the Finals. This is Gordon Hayward’s first season back from an injury, and he isn’t doing so well so far this year.  However, next year might be the Celtics’ year because it’s going to be Hayward’s second year back. Hopefully, he will be better, and the whole team will have more experience.

4. Why did they have a rough start to the season?

I think the reason the Celtics started the season so poorly is that Hayward just came back from injury, so it’s going to take maybe a year for him to get back to his normal self.  Kyrie started the season off poorly, but he has started playing better. That might be the start of something for the Celtics. They’re also relying on their young core, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Marcus Smart, because they do not have anyone else on the team that could carry the team other than Kyrie.  They’re relying on these players, but they’re still really young and need another year or two.

5.  Should the Celtics get rid of Horford?

Yes, I think they should get rid of Horford because he’s getting way too old. They should be trying to get a young center that can grab rebounds and block shots, unlike Horford.  Horford has troubles with rebounding and even blocking shots. It’s also hard for him to finish at the rim sometimes. He is the veteran of the team, but if they keep him another two years, the Celtics will wish they got rid of him sooner.  Right now Horford, as a starting center, doesn’t have the best stats; he averages 12.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. That is not as strong as another older center in the league, Deandre Jordan. He averages 11.1 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.
