In October 2023, the sixth grade students of Trottier Middle School went to Nature’s Classroom in Groton, MA for two days with one night being a sleepaway.
Before Trottier went to Nature’s Classroom, the sixth grade students went to Stone. Trottier stopped going to Stone for two reasons. One was because of Covid, which was a main reason why a lot of companies shut down. The other was because the owner of the company passed away. Trottier needed to find a new place to go for field trips. Last year each grade got to go to Nature’s Classroom in Groton for one day, and, since people liked it, the sixth graders went back this year for an overnight trip.
According to Mr. Winston, “The Nature’s Classroom trip was a huge success. The students had fun while learning about the environment, nature, and each other.”
During this field trip, the students did activities such as “the Knight” and “Camouflage.” Jack Carbaue (a sixth grader at T.M.S) said that those were his favorite activities during the trip.
Although, the students had different thoughts on how the trip went. Some of them said that the food was worse than they would have thought. From Mrs. Hight’s perspective, she thought, referring to the food, “It was definitely better than I expected.”
Some of the students said their bed was hard. This made it so the students didn’t sleep very well. On the bright side, the students ended up having fun staying up late at night, with their friends.
The Nature’s Classroom curriculum follows the Next Generation science standards so it can provide great science education. Students learned about organisms but more specifically energy transfer. Walking through the woods, the kids at Trottier learned more about nature and how to treat it.
